Home/Term Life

The most protection for the least.

Term life covers you for a set number of years, usually 10 to 30, at the lowest cost per dollar of coverage. It's built for the years your family depends on your income most.

What it is

Big coverage, simple price.

Term life insurance pays your family a tax-free lump sum if you pass away during the term you choose. Because it's built for a set period instead of your whole life, it offers the most coverage for the lowest premium.

Your premium is locked in for the length of the term. Many policies also include a conversion option, which lets you switch to permanent coverage later without a new medical exam.

Term is a strong fit when your biggest obligations have an end date: a mortgage, raising kids, or the years before retirement.

Who it's for
  • Young families with children at home
  • Homeowners with a mortgage
  • Business owners and partners who need key person or buy-sell coverage
  • Anyone whose income their family relies on

Why term is the starting point.

For most families with young kids, term is the most efficient way to make sure the plan survives without you.

Coverage you can use while you're alive.

Many of the policies I write include living benefits. If a serious illness hits, you can draw on part of your death benefit early to pay bills, cover treatment, or keep the mortgage current. Tap a card to see how it works.

Living benefit riders, qualifying conditions, and payout amounts vary by carrier, product, and state. Accelerating a benefit reduces the death benefit paid to your beneficiaries.

Questions

Common questions.

How much term life insurance do I need?

A common rule of thumb is 10 to 12 times your income, but your mortgage, debts, kids' education, and existing coverage all matter. The coverage calculator on this site gives you a quick estimate.

What happens when my term ends?

The coverage expires. Depending on the policy, you may be able to renew at a higher rate or convert to permanent coverage before the term ends.

Can I have term and permanent coverage together?

Yes, and many families do. Term covers the big, temporary needs, while a permanent policy like IUL or whole life covers lifelong needs and builds cash value.

Is term life cheaper when I'm younger?

Yes. Premiums are based on your age and health when you apply, so locking in a policy earlier usually means a lower price for the whole term.
